About The Artist
Florence Steerment (b.1998) is a young emerging artist based in Ely, Cambridgeshire. She started out as a painter, interested in themes around memory, physical scars and loss. She has since transitioned into a multi-media artist, currently sculpture based around themes of loss and nature.
Her work is intertwined with her personal life, and she uses her practice as a way of moving through her own grief. Florence studied Fine Art at Cambridge School of Art for both her BA and her MA, which she is due to finish in 2021. During her time there, she discovered her passion for text-based works, inspired by Tracey Emin, Jenny Holzer and her own love of poetry. She incorporated her own text into her paintings. Since exploring sculpture as a method of working, she has continued to incorporate text into her work, usually through hand carving into the sculpture. Some of her projects allowed her to travel and explore specific sites and through this she became interested in site-specific art and landart / earthworks.
Her current practice revolves around her local woodland, where she gathers natural materials like fallen rotten branches and uses them to create sculptures, carving her poetry into them. Due to the ephemerality of the material, the work won’t last forever. This is a nod to the natural decay in the environment, and the loss of loved ones, witnessed by the artist.
